RIFF Industry Days

The Reykjavík International Film Festival Industry Days aim at facilitating collaborations across boarders. At previous festivals we have held introductions of local talents, seminars geared towards those who are thirsty for knowledge and panel discussions that focus on the most vital issues in the present. The Icelandic film industry is a diverse community of individuals rich in experience and knowledge relating to development, production and distribution. Lights, camera, action!

The program for 2016 is still in progress but you cant find a draft below*

Masterclass with Director Alejandro Jodorowsky

Alejandro Jodorowsky is a visionary director, screenwriter, playwright, actor,
author, poet, producer, composer, musician, comic book writer and spiritual guru. Alejandro is probably best known for his surreal fantasy film The Holy Mountain (1973), which he wrote, directed and starred in. This 87 years old veteran is one of RIFF´s main guests this year and we are truly humbled by his presence at our little festival.

P.S.
He’s also spiritual mentor to director Nicolas Winding Refn (‘Drive‘, ‘Only God Forgives‘).

Masterclass with Director Darren Aronofsky

This Brooklyn born film maker, screenwriter and film producer has received acclaim for his often surreal, disturbing films. His early work such as Pi, Requiem for a Dream have gained a cult following when his recent work The Wrestler, Black Swan and Noah are all recognized block-busters with Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. RIFF celebrates the coming of this controversial and

creative filmmaker with an awe. Aronofsky has never been one to pull any punches, he’s been fighting an uphill battle since directing Pi, trying and succeeding in convincing others to come along and make wild, uncompromising and heartbreaking works of art. Whether it’s wrestling with the theme of addiction in his adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.’s Requiem for a Dream – or wrestling back actor Mickey Rourke from semi-retirement to star in The Wrestler – Darren Aronofsky doesn’t hold back.

RIFF Honorary Award Ceremony with Alejandro Jodorowsky and Darren Aronofsky

There is a long tradition at RIFF for this celebrated event which in the past years has taken place at Bessastaðir; home of the president of Iceland. Former artists who have received the RIFF Honorary Award include: Jim Jarmusch, Aki Kaurismaki, Béla Tarr, Milos Forman, Susanne Bier, James Gray, Mike Leigh and David Cronenberg. This is the real deal.

New Icelandic Films: Work in Process

In a collaboration with the Icelandic Film Fund we are proud to invite our Industry Days guests to this introduction of Icelandic film projects in-the-making. These projects are a collection of short films, documentaries and feature films and have all been fully or partly funded but are in different stages of production.

A sneak peak into what is happening in current Icelandic film making is a privilege and this is why this event is for invitees only.

Meet the Icelandic Film Composers

The Icelandic music scene has been one of Iceland´s main attractions ever since Björk conquered the world with her unique sound. It seems the music talent in Iceland is endless and it has also affected the film business on an international scale. Film composer Ólafur Arnalds took home the BAFTA awards for his soundtrack in the TV series Broadchurch (2013 and 2015) and Jóhann Jóhannsson two times Oscar and BAFTA nominee and a Golden Globe winner for The Theory of Everything.

Music from bands like Sigur Rós and Of Monsters and men have been prominent in many films and this is just a small sample of the talent coming from Iceland.

The event is a Show-reel panel where we introduce some of Iceland´s most excellent film composers presenting their best work (participants are not yet confirmed).

Q&A with Daði Einarsson Creative Director of RVX

Daði Einarsson is co-founder and Creative Director of RVX and has lead the company from its formation in 2008. He has comprehensive international experience after working with The Mill and Framestore in London, New York and in Reykjavik. Dadi has worked with groundbreaking directors and his credits include VFX supervision for Harry Potter, Contraband, 2 Guns and most recently award-winning visual effects work for Gravity and Everest.

Shooting in Iceland: The Amazing Location Trip

Filming in Iceland has been increasingly popular among international film makers with all the extreme locations Iceland has to offer. Films such as Batman begins, Flags of our fathers, Game of thrones, The secret life of Walter Mitty, Interstellar and Noah are only few examples of the huge location services and co-production we have to offer. The trip is very long (approx. 6 hrs.) but covers Iceland´s main film attractions so it´s well worth it.
A visit to production company Saga Film

Saga Film has over 35 years of production experience starting mainly with location services for Hollywood blockbusters such as James Bond´s View to a kill, Batman Begins and Tombraider. From there Saga Film took the lead in producing and directing icelandic commercials, and then later a dominant player in TV shows and documentaries.
