Cave Cinema in September

On the 3rd of September Reykjavík International Film Festival, RIFF, in collaboration with Cintamani,Arctic Adventures, Sagafilm and Reykjavík Excursions offered a unique film experience in a cave nearby Reykjavík.

RIFF has put together a special film program for the screening which will take place in a cave near the city which fits extremely well for film screenings. After a short and enjoyable hike to the cave three of the most renowned Icelandic shorts of the last decade will be screened. Love Story by Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir who now works on her first feature film, Whale valley by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson which received a special mention jury award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and finally The Last Farm by Rúnar Rúnarsson, nominated to the Academy Awards in 2006. Guests of the cave-in cinema will as well see five minutes of the one minute serieTell me your dream. Make it succinct and make it spectacular. The serie is produced by The One Minutes and will be screened full length at RIFF this fall.

Departure will be from Reykjavik with two trips planned at 09.30 am and 2 pm, departing from the Cintamani store in Bankastræti. The trip will be guided by guides from both Arctic Adventures and RIFF and hot drinks will be provided by baristas from Mekka Wines & Spirits.

  • Included: busride, cave hiking, guiding, equipment, film screening, hot drinks.
  • Disclaimer: We advise everybody to be properly dressed according to weather for the short hike. There can be chilly conditions in the cave as well. In the unfortunate and unlikely case of unsufficient attendance, the event will be postponed/cancelled.
  • Bring with you: Warm outdor clothing. Good hiking shoes are a bonus. They can be rented from Arctic Adventures if notified in advance.
  • Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours.

About the films:

Love Story by Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir who now works on her first feature film. A story of love, madness, and 24-hour daylight. The story begins in New York, when Solange’s boyfriend Baldur mysteriously takes off for Iceland. She follows, but an even deeper mystery awaits her.

Whale valley by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson which received a special mention jury award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The film depicts a strong bound been two brothers through the eyes of the younger one and a journey that marks a turning point in the brothers lives.

The Last Farm by Rúnar Rúnarsson, nominated to the Academy Awards in 2006. His daughter Lilja as well as the delivery man Jón believe that the farmer Hrafn makes his house ready for winter because he and his wife Gróa should move into an elderly home. Things turn out in another way.
